Choosing Yarn 101 ~ October 8

Take the mystery out of choosing yarn for knitting and crochet in this insightful class. Learn how to select the type of fiber content for a project, make yarn substitutions, read yarn labels, and use gauge swatches. The right yarn will make or break your project. Now you can choose wisely.

What to Bring: For gauge swatches, practice yarn of your choice and at least 3 sizes of needles or hooks.

Learn to Spin Yarn - Intro to Drop Spindling ~ October 15

Learn one of the oldest crafts in recorded history: making yarn on a drop spindle. There is nothing quite like the creative outlet of taking raw fiber and a stick to make yarn that you can knit, crochet, or weave into something absolutely beautiful. Class materials will be provided.

Advanced Crochet Techniques ~ October 22

Do you get frustrated with your foundation chains being too long or short? Learn to create the foundation chain with your first row and it will never happen again! Do your turning chains create a hole in your fabric? Learn a new stitch that eliminates turning chains and looks just like a double crochet stitch. These techniques will transform the way you crochet and give your items a professional look.

You must be proficient in basic crochet (i.e., feel confident in your crochet abilities) with a good understanding of how stitches are made in order to take this class.

Intro to Sock Knitting ~ November 19, 26 & December 3

No more generic sock sizes! Learn how to knit fabulous socks that fit your foot, instead of 6 sizes all at once. They make a great small, portable project. Learn how to cast on and create a sock from cuff to toe while conquering the heel flap and the amazing kitchener stitch.

This knitting class will be suitable for someone with basic knowledge of knitting, including casting on, the knit stitch and the purl stitch.

Beginning Crochet

Learn how to create a crochet project from beginning to end. Along the way you will learn the most popular crochet stitches - single and double; how to create consistent stitches; how to change colors and balls of yarn; and finish a project by securely weaving in your ends.

Required materials: Size i-9 hook and medium weight (#4) yarn in a light, solid color. No dark colors or variegated (multiple colored) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own. Additional recommended supplies will be discussed in the first session.

How to Read a Crochet Pattern

Learn to read patterns and stitch diagrams while making the classic granny square. Working in the round opens up a whole new world of crochet from afghan motifs to hats to socks. This class will give you a solid foundation for reading patterns and you will learn how to make the most popular motif in crochet history – the classic granny square.

Required materials: Size i-9 hook and medium weight (#4) yarn in a light, solid color. No dark colors or variegated (multiple colored) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own. Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Intermediate Crochet: Increasing and Decreasing (one 2-hour session)

Step away from the rectangle and add shape to your crochet fabric. These stitches are used in garment making and to add visual interest to straight row items. A chevron pattern is included with this class. You must be proficient with the single and double crochet stitches before class.

Intermediate Crochet: Textured Stitches (one 2-hour session)

Make your crochet items pop. Put all your basic skills together to add dimension and depth to your projects with these textured stitches. If you’ve become bored with the basic stitches, this is the perfect class for you. You must be proficient with the double crochet stitch before class.

Learn the basics of making a top-down crochet hat that fits perfectly. Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level. You must know the single crochet stitch before class.

Yarn 101 (one 2-hour session)

Take the mystery out of choosing yarns for a knit or crochet project in this new class. Learn how to select the type of fiber content for a project, make yarn substitutions and read yarn labels. A handout will be provided.

How to Make Plarn (one 2-hour session)

Repurpose those plastic shopping bags into yarn. Plarn is perfect for knitting or crocheting camping mats and mats for the homeless. Grab that bag of bags in your closet and let’s give it new life!

Unfinished Projects Class

Does a project or pattern have you stumped? Get help from an experienced crocheter and knitter in this open class.

Broomstick Lace Crochet (two 2-hour sessions)

Discover a 19th-century crocheting technique to create a lacy scarf using a crochet hook and a very large knitting needle. All you need to know is the single crochet stitch!

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: Size K-10 hook, one size 35 knitting needle and about 160 yards of a medium weight yarn of your choice.

Intro to Tunisian Crochet  (two 2-hour sessions)

Tunisian Crochet is a wonderful blend of crochet and knitting. Made with its own tool that has the length of a knitting needle but the head of a crochet hook, Tunisian Crochet has tight dense stitches that are well designed for winter blankets, sweaters, and scarves that will keep the cold out. You will enjoy this addictive and versatile technique. Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: Size K Tunisian hook and medium weight yarn in a light, solid color. No dark colors or variegated (multiple colored) yarn.

Hairpin Lace Crochet  (two 2-hour sessions)

Learn a crocheting technique popular in Victorian times to create a soft and beautiful fashion scarf perfect for warmer temps.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: Size G-6 hook, stitch markers, hairpin lace loom set at 2.25” and 2 skeins/balls of DK weight yarn of your choice, suggest one variegated and one solid.

Christmas Crochet Stocking Project Class  (three 2-hour sessions)

Give a unique gift this year by making personalized Christmas stockings for everyone in your family! Choose from two patterns – easy and intermediate skill levels. This project is a great way to learn shaping with decreases and short rows.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: stitch markers, 3 colors of yarn of your choice, and crochet hook sizes G-6 and H-8 for easy pattern or H-8 and i-9 for intermediate pattern.

Beginning Knitting (Continental style)

Continental style knitting is great for the crocheter wanting to learn how to knit and the English style knitter wanting to expand his/her skills for speed and colorwork. In this class, you will learn how to create a project from beginning to end. Along the way you will learn the two basic stitches - knit and purl; how to change colors and balls of yarn; and finish a project by securely weaving in your ends.

Required materials: Size 8 needles (circular or straight) and medium weight (#4) yarn in a light, solid color. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own. Additional recommended supplies will be discussed in the first session.
