Take a class on your own or with friends! Learn from Butterfield Alpaca Ranch owner, Tashia Butterfield, who has taught thousands of people to crochet and knit.

Classes will be held at the flagship store at 612 Main St in Alma, NE. It is best to schedule your class(es) during store hours - which change seasonally - but acceptions can be made. Contact Tashia at tashia@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch.com to set up your class(es).

CROCHET

Beginning Crochet

Learn how to create a crochet project from beginning to end. Along the way you will learn the most popular crochet stitches - single and double; how to create consistent stitches; how to change colors and balls of yarn; and finish a project by securely weaving in your ends.

Required materials: Size i-9 hook and medium weight (#4) yarn in a light, solid color. No dark colors or variegated (multiple colored) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own. Additional recommended supplies will be discussed in the first session.

Class time: 4 hours split into two 2-hour sessions. It is recommended that you choose two dates a week apart for this class.

How to Read a Crochet Pattern

Learn to read patterns and stitch diagrams while making the classic granny square. Working in the round opens up a whole new world of crochet from afghan motifs to hats to socks. This class will give you a solid foundation for reading patterns and you will learn how to make the most popular motif in crochet history – the classic granny square.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level. You must know the double crochet stitch before class.

Required materials: Size i-9 hook and medium weight (#4) yarn in a light, solid color. No dark colors or variegated (multiple colored) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Advanced Beginning Crochet Project Class: Make Your First Crochet Beanie 

Learn the basics of making a top-down crochet beanie hat that fits perfectly. You'll have the opportunity to choose from three types of stitches, three textures, and three edgings to make a custom beanie.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level. You must know the single and double crochet stitches before class.

Required materials: Size H-8 (5mm) or I-9 (5.5mm) hook and medium weight (#4) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Class time: 6 hours split into three 2-hour sessions. It is recommended that you choose three dates a week apart for this class.

Advanced Beginning & Intermediate Crochet Project Class: Christmas Stocking 

Give a unique gift this year by making personalized Christmas stockings for everyone in your family! Choose from two patterns – easy and intermediate skill levels. This project is a great way to learn shaping with decreases and short rows.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: stitch markers, 3 colors of yarn of your choice, and crochet hook sizes G-6 and H-8 for the easy pattern or H-8 and i-9 for the intermediate pattern. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Class time: 6 hours split into three 2-hour sessions. It is recommended that you choose three dates a week apart for this class.

Intermediate Crochet: Increasing & Decreasing

Step away from the rectangle and add shape to your crochet fabric. These stitches are used in garment making and to add visual interest to straight row items. A chevron pattern is included in this class.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level. You must be proficient with the single and double crochet stitches before class.

Required materials: Size i-9 hook and medium weight (#4) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Intermediate Crochet: Textured Stitches

Make your crochet items pop. Put all your basic skills together to add dimension and depth to your projects with these textured stitches. If you’ve become bored with the basic stitches, this is the perfect class for you.

Advanced Crochet Techniques

Do you get frustrated with your foundation chains being too long or short? Learn to create the foundation chain with your first row and it will never happen again! Do your turning chains create a hole in your fabric? Learn a new stitch that eliminates turning chains and looks just like a double crochet stitch. These techniques will transform the way you crochet and give your items a professional look.

Prerequisite: You must be proficient in basic crochet (i.e., feel confident in your crochet abilities) with a good understanding of how stitches are made in order to take this class.

Required materials: Size i-9 hook and medium weight (#4) yarn in a light, solid color. No dark colors or variegated (multiple colored) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Intro to Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian Crochet is a wonderful blend of crochet and knitting. Made with its own tool that has the length of a knitting needle but the head of a crochet hook, Tunisian Crochet has tight dense stitches that are well designed for winter blankets, sweaters, and scarves that will keep the cold out. You will enjoy this addictive and versatile technique.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: Size K Tunisian hook and medium weight yarn in a light, solid color. No dark colors or variegated (multiple colored) yarn. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Broomstick Lace Crochet

Discover a 19th-century crocheting technique to create a lacy scarf using a crochet hook and a very large knitting needle. All you need to know is the single crochet stitch!

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: Size K-10 hook, one size 35 knitting needle and about 160 yards of a medium weight yarn of your choice. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Class time: 4 hours split into two 2-hour sessions. It is recommended that you choose two dates a week apart for this class.

Hairpin Lace Crochet

Learn a crocheting technique popular in Victorian times to create a soft and beautiful fashion scarf perfect for warmer temps.

Prerequisite: beginning crochet class or experience at the beginning crochet level.

Required materials: Size G-6 hook, stitch markers, hairpin lace loom set at 2.25” and 2 skeins/balls of DK weight yarn of your choice, suggest one variegated and one solid. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Class time: 4 hours split into two 2-hour sessions. It is recommended that you choose two dates a week apart for this class.

KNITTING

Beginning Knitting (Continental style)

Continental style knitting is great for the crocheter wanting to learn how to knit and the English style knitter wanting to expand his/her skills for speed and colorwork. In this class, you will learn how to create a project from beginning to end. Along the way you will learn the two basic stitches - knit and purl; how to change colors and balls of yarn; and finish a project by securely weaving in your ends.

Required materials: Size 8 needles (circular or straight) and medium weight (#4) yarn in a light, solid color. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own. Additional recommended supplies will be discussed in the first session.

Class time: 4 hours split into two 2-hour sessions. It is recommended that you choose two dates a week apart for this class.

Advanced Beginning Knitting: Fixing Mistakes

Learn how to fix the most common knitting mistakes, like dropped stitches, twisted stitches, and more.

Prerequisite: You must know how to knit and purl before taking this class.

Required materials: For practice, bring your choice of yarn and the corresponding needles.

Class time: 2 hours

Intermediate Knitting: Intro to Sock Knitting

No more generic sock sizes! Learn how to knit fabulous socks that fit your foot, instead of 6 sizes all at once. They make a great small, portable project. Learn how to cast on and create a sock from cuff to toe while conquering the heel flap and the amazing kitchener stitch.

Prerequisite: beginning knitting class or experience at the beginning knitting level. You must be proficient with casting on, the knit stitch, and purl stitch before class.

Required materials: 5 dpns – size US 5 (3.25mm) or US 6 (3.5mm); approx. 285-320 yards of worsted weight yarn (self-stripping yarn would be fun for this project); blunt tip tapestry needle; measuring tape; and an optional row counter. Materials will be available for purchase at the shop but you are welcome to bring your own.

Class time: 6 hours split into three 2-hour sessions. It is recommended that you choose three dates a week apart for this class.

CROCHET & KNITTING

Choosing Yarn 101

Take the mystery out of choosing yarn for knitting and crochet in this insightful class. Learn how to select the type of fiber content for a project, make yarn substitutions, read yarn labels, and use gauge swatches. The right yarn will make or break your project. Now you can choose wisely.

Prerequisite: experience at the beginning crochet or beginning knitting level.

What to Bring: For gauge swatches, practice yarn of your choice and at least 3 sizes of needles or hooks.

Class time: 2 hours
